Boracay Left Stunned as DPWH Approves Rejected Bridge.
Boracay Islanders and businesses have been left stunned at the news from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) this week, that the Boracay Bridge Project proposal from San Miguel has been approved.
San Miguel’s Bridge proposal has been rejected several times by the Provincial Government of Aklan, the Municipal Government of Malay, and various multi-sectoral groups in the province.
On April 16, DPWH Sec. Vincent Dizon advised that Boracay’s islanders, businesses and LGU would still be consulted on the Bridge Project, and their concerns would be addressed.
This is an odd statement to make AFTER the P7.78-billion project has already been awarded. A consultation, by definition, should be undertaken BEFORE a project or contract is approved, not after.
Aside from that Boracay has already made its opinion and concerns known on more than one occasion – and it’s an overwhelming ‘no to the bridge’, with concerns ranging from:-
- Catastrophic damage to seagrass beds, coral reefs, and the unknown impact of this on Boracay’s world-renowned White Beach.
- Loss of business and income for Caticlan and Boracay boatmen, luggage porters, port workers, and small businesses and entrepreneurs located at and close to the ports.
- Additional Traffic to the island and the added congestion and pollution it brings.
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (Provincial Board) of Aklan has denounced the decision in a strongly worded resolution to the DPWH, formally objecting to the approval of the unsolicited proposal from San Miguel Holdings Corp. and highlighting the explicit opposition of it by the Provincial Government of Aklan and the Municipal Government of Malay.
“This decision reflects the voice of the people of Aklan. We will not allow the welfare of our constituents and the future of Boracay to be sacrificed for a project that we do not need and do not support” – Reynaldo Quimpo SP.
It would appear that Boracay islanders only learned this week that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) had issued a Notice of Award to San Miguel Holdings Corporation March 25, 2026.
SM’s Ramon S. Ang announced by text on April 13 “We will start geotechnical design soon.” Ang also stated that the Bridge will help address waste disposal issues, and ease pressure on the island by enabling more visitors to stay in accommodation on the mainland with easy access to Boracay.
San Miguel Corp. (SMC) has a number of projects in the area, notably a $300-million investment to upgrade Godofredo P. Ramos Airport (Caticlan airport) and construct new amenities, including a 400-room hotel, a Convention Center and a retail complex.
Siargao LGU Issues Warning To Tourists
The Local Government Unit (LGU) of General Luna, Siargao, has issued strict warnings for tourists to adhere to local laws or face fines, legal action or even deportation.
The warning comes in response to rising incidents of alleged violations and misconduct by tourists and foreign nationals. Some incidents have been captured on camera phones and shared on social media – showing tourists disrespecting locals, drunken and disorderly behavior, and property and environmental damage.
The Honorable Bingle C. Silvosa spoke about the issue during a Regular Session of the Sangguniang Bayan Municipality of General Luna on April 13, 2026.
Silvosa stressed that it is an issue of accountability, not nationality, and that laws exist to protect everyone. And, that when laws are broken it can damage a destinations reputation and discourage responsible travelers from visiting.
“Let us remember: protecting our tourism areas is not about closing our doors – it is about safeguarding what we proudly open to the world. We can be both welcoming and firm, both hospitable and just.” – Hon. Bingle C. Silvosa, Chairman – Committee on Tourism.
Violations including disrespecting locals, business or environmental damage, and disorderly behavior may result in fines, legal action, or deportation.
The crackdown is in partnership with the Surigao Immigration Field Office in Surigao City, which will address any violations of local and immigration laws by foreign nationals.
Siargao’s Wild Executive Chef Interviewed for BBC World Service – World Business Report.
Executive Chef of Wild, Siargao – Andrew Malarky – was interviewed by the BBC’s World Service Team earlier this week.
The news report discussed the suspension of tax on paraffin and cooking gas – Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders – instigated by President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. in an attempt to keep food prices down in the country, as the war in the Middle East continues.
When asked how the war and fuel cost increases are affecting restaurants on the island, Malarky replied:
“In Siargao everything is amplified – we’re not just dealing with higher fuel costs – we’re dealing with layered logistics….. It directly impacts food costs, utilities – LPG costs have gone up – so that’s a big hit to our base costs. On an island you don’t have the luxury of stable supply chains – fuel volatility becomes menu volatility.”
When asked if Wild Siargao had needed to cut portion sizes or increase menu prices in response to rising fuel costs, Malarky explained that they haven’t needed to yet as fortunately much of the restaurants menu has always been locally sourced.
Asked if he was worried for his restaurant long-term, Andrew replied: –
“As business owners we’re used to uncertainty, and we’re also used to rebuilding and pivoting.”

Aklan Trekkers Inc. Stern Message To Travel Influencers.
Aklan Trekkers Inc this week urged Content Creators and Influencers to stop creating new, trendy names for existing Philippine beauty and nature spots.
Aklan Trekkers Inc. a non-profit organization that promotes responsible mountaineering, environmental conservation, sustainable ecotourism, and the preservation of traditional knowledge shared a post this week about a rise in the numbers of influencers and content creators attempting to ‘rebrand’ mountains, rivers, and waterfalls as “discovered” spots, for greater engagement and views.
The organization pointed out that this practice is disrespectful to the local communities, elders and indigenous people who have long known and protected the names of these natural wonders. Names which often “describe their shape, mark important events or landmarks, refer to species found in the area, or reflect spiritual beliefs tied to the land.”
Aklan Trekkers encourages Influencers and Creatives instead to engage with elders and community members to learn the true names and meanings, of local beauty and nature spots, so they can understand and promote the cultural, historical or spiritual significance for the surrounding community.
Global Industry News Updates
Europe Has 6 Weeks Of Jet Fuel Left
The International Energy Agency has warned this week that Europe has only 6 weeks of jet fuel left, as supply routes continue to be disrupted by war in the Middle East.
Jet fuel prices in Europe are up 100% since the war escalated and officials warn that flight cancellations could soon follow.
Lufthansa Cancels Hundreds Of Flights
Lufthansa had to cancel hundreds of flights this week in response to strike action by cabin crew on Friday April 10, as well as separately-held pilot strikes on Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 April.
Cabin Crew union UFO announced additional strike action at Lufthansa (LH) and Lufthansa CityLine (CL) for Wednesday 15th April and Thursday 16th of this week.
The pilots’ union, Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), also announced further strike action on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 April.
In a statement online the airline advised: –
“Lufthansa is working intensively to keep the impact on passengers as low as possible. We are trying to have as many flights as possible operated by other airlines within the Lufthansa Group and by partner airlines. However, despite these efforts, flight cancellations are unavoidable.”
Cabin Crew and Pilots are striking in dispute over pay and working conditions, and a stall in the negotiation proceedings.
FIFA Cancels Thousands Of US Hotel Rooms Ahead Of World Cup.
FIFA has cancelled thousands of hotel room reservations in U.S. World Cup host cities, including approximately 2,000 rooms in Philadelphia, as reported by the UK newspaper, The Independent this week.
Hotels in Philadelphia, Boston and Mexico City are reporting high cancellation rates with “tens of thousands” of room nights having been released. These cancellations have been positioned as being normal, pre-tournament inventory adjustment and “standard practice” by FIFA.
However, media outlets are pointing to softer-than-expected demand and sales for 2026 World Cup tickets and, therefore, accommodations.
One Hotel owner commented on Reddit–
“As a hotel owner near the KC area, prices are 100% coming down. They shared a report that forecast is way down for the World Cup and everyone has been advised to lower optimism and adjust price accordingly.”
Football fans around the world criticized the high ticket prices for matches, when ticket sales first opened.
Fans have also indicated that the new visa requirements – which includes giving access to 5-years worth of social media content – and the current political climate, have been key factors for deciding not to travel to the US for the World Cup.
The U.S. Travel Association remains optimistic that those World Cup Fans who have indicated they still intend to visit the US, will be from the high-spend demographic, as Traveler Intent surveys indicate that: –
- Fans expect to spend more than $5,000 per person
- One in Three will stay longer than 2 weeks
- More than 80% are open to visiting additional destinations while in the US.
OysterLink – a US Restaurant and Hospitality Job Platform – cautions that while the World Cup is still expected to drive demand in the US, the uplift is likely to fall short of the early projections given.
“What we’re seeing is a pivot toward flexibility. Hotels are adjusting rates, relaxing booking restrictions and treating this more like a high-demand summer period rather than a once-in-a-generation windfall.” – Milos Eric, Co-Founder and General Manager, OysterLink
Many hotels have already moved away from their original event-based pricing strategies and reopened their room inventory to general travelers.
Latest On Booking.com’s Latest Data Breach
It was revealed early this week that another significant data breach had occurred affecting Booking.com customer and accommodation partner accounts, and booking data.
What still hasn’t been revealed is how extensive the breach was. Reports so far indicate that the data breach isn’t limited to specific hotel chains and there are no country patterns either.
Booking.com itself hasn’t released much information at all, even with regards to how many customer accounts have been affected. What has been confirmed, in an email to the affected customers and business partners, is that no financial information or data was breached.
One business owner on Reddit wrote:-
I’m a booking.com partner and have a holiday home rented out with booking.com – I received an email the other day saying that unauthorised third parties had accessed some of my reservations. The confusing thing is that I have 2FA on my account with booking.com, they didn’t prompt me to change my password in the extranet, and they didn’t explain what activity they have identified. It’s super confusing.
According to customers who have received an email from Booking.com the data that was accessed was: –
- Customers’ full names and email addresses
- Customers’ phone numbers and physical addresses
- Booking details and reservation history
- Miscellaneous information shared with properties (i.e., special requests or identification details).
Those customers with active or pending bookings have been issued with an updated Reservation PIN by Booking.com.
Travel.com reported – in their article Booking.com Keeps Travelers In The Dark Over New Data Breach – that some customers reported concerns about a possible data breach as much as fifteen (15) days prior to Booking.com’s official statement.
“I reported a security breach 15 days ago, and they claimed everything was fine on their end. Apparently, they are now sending automated emails to many customers, which clearly shows this is not an issue with just one hotel, but likely something related to their booking management app or security systems,” – Reddit User.
Booking.com has been in the headlines regularly in recent years, for data breaches and phishing attacks targeting both accommodation Front Desk staff, and customers.
Responsible Travel Reports 20% Drop In Tour Sales
Responsible Travel reports a 20% drop in tour sales across 112 global travel companies, since the attacks on Iran started in February 2026.
Responsible Travel surveyed 112 of their tour operator partners: –
- Almost 80% reported falling enquiries
- 56% see no sign of improvement
- 60% report a drop of 20% or more in sales
- 100% of operators (in the Middle East) report declines of 20%+
- Some companies have seen cancellations of up to 90%, with bookings stopping entirely.
The implications for drops in tour bookings is significant at the local level. The vast majority of tour operator businesses are SME’s (Small & Medium-sized Enterprises) – small businesses which support livelihoods and typically employ local people, sometimes seasonally, often part-time.
Industry News Updates Tech:
Gen Z’s Rising Emotion-based Travel Trend
Industry data indicates that Gen Z and Millennials are more likely to book a holiday based on their interests and mood, rather than by country or destination.
Layla.ai highlights that 40% of younger demographics are increasingly starting their trip planning without a destination or country in mind. A trend Phocuswright has also identified in its 2025 U.S. Consumer Traveler Report, published last October.
Instead Gen Z and Millennials are using AI platforms like Layla.ai or Kayak’s AI interface, to generate travel ideas based on their personal preferences, motivations, and the experiences they are seeking, and these AI platforms allow for long tail inquiries that focus on demand and interests
e.g. “I want to travel to somewhere with my girlfriends late July or early August, warm but not too hot. Direct flight only and preferably under 8 hours flying time. Prefer a smaller, quiet, independent LGBTQ-friendly hotel with twin bed room options, that includes a buffet or continental breakfast. It should have a pool or be close to a quiet, gentle beach. We would like there to be a mix of excursions and tours that are an hour or less from the hotel – water sports and activities, museums and art galleries, cultural and craft centers.”
Kayak has said that customers that use its AI Interface are 10 times more likely to start their search without mentioning a destination or providing specific travel dates.
This is useful information for hotels, destinations and tour operators who want to optimize their website and marketing channels to be more visible to AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claud etc.
Visa Launches Agentic Commerce Connecting Platform.
On April 8 Visa launched an Agentic Commerce gamechanger – its Intelligent Commerce Connect (ICC), which doesn’t just support Visa cards but non-Visa cards too, AND it can connect to every AI agent.
What this means is that by integrating Visa’s ICC a hotel or tour operator will be able to accept any purchases made by any AI agent or platform (ChatGPT, Perplexity etc), using any type of card.
And, in addition, through integrating Visa’s ICC the hotel or tour operators full ‘product catalog’ will also become visibile to all AI agents – increasing visibility to agents and human searchers.
