Hotel Design Summit To Be Held September
A summit focusing on the future of hotel design has been scheduled to take place during the 9th Hospitality Philippines Conference (HPC2026) in September 2026.
The Hotel Design Summit Philippines on September 9, is one of four specialized summits set to take place at the HPC2026 conference, with the main theme of the 2-day event being, What Comes After Growth: Hospitality’s Next Test in the Philippines.
One of Design Summits Panel discussions, Regenerative Hospitality: Moving Beyond Sustainability in Development, will look at how architects and designers can embrace and enhance biodiversity throughout their projects.
Another, New-Zero Hotels in Practice: ESG, Carbon & Future Asset Value will consider green financing, and how designing and building for a low carbon footprint can increase a hotels asset valuation.
Other panel discussions are:
- Authenticity and Hyper-Local Design: Reframing Luxury Hospitality in Asia.

The 9th Hospitality Philippines Conference 2026 will take place September 9–10, at the Marriott Manila, with the four specialized summits covering: investment, tropical design, revenue orchestration and travel-tech innovations.
The HPC2026 is billed as 100+expert speakers, with 500+ pre-qualified delegates from 300+ leading companies from across APAC.

Methanol Poisoning Alert Campaign Launched
Relatives of European tourists who died after drinking alcoholic drinks contaminated with methanol have launched a campaign warning tourists ahead of the vacation season.
The “Know The Signs” campaign aims to warn travelers visiting 29 destinations, including The Philippines, Indonesia, Laos and Vietnam, to be aware of the risks of contaminated alcohol and the side effects to watch for.
They want to ensure that travelers are aware of the small amount of time between drinking something with methanol in it, and it becoming fatal.
Symptoms to watch out for include appearing much drunker than you would expect to be, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. If you suspect you or a friend may have drunk a contaminated drink, and 12-48 hours afterwards you are experiencing confusion, vision problems, blindness, abdominal pain, vertigo, breathlessness or convulsions you should seek immediate emergency treatment.
The campaigners recommend avoiding spirit-based drinks, cocktails, shots, towers and buckets, and sticking to branded beers, and drinks in sealed bottles and cans.
The other countries listed in the warning are Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, and Uganda.
All the countries listed have reported incidences of tourists having been poisoned by methanol-spiked drinks.
Direct LAX To Manila Flights Soon
The Department of Tourism (DOT) this week celebrated the announcement of direct flights between Los Angeles (LAX) and Manila.
The Delta Air Lines direct flight will launch in March 2027, and it is expected to expand to daily flights by June 2027.
It is expected that the route will be popular especially among OFWs and Fil-Am travelers.
Americans are the fastest growing demographic for foreign national arrivals to the Philippines, having recently overtaken South Korea as the top source of international visitors.
Between January to May 2026 the Philippines saw 531,859 arrivals from American travelers. This is a 19.4% share of the total market and a growth of 7.07% on the same period in 2025.
Boracay To Host SEA Swimming Championship
Boracay will be hosting the Southeast Asia Open Swimming Championships in August 2026.
Organized by Philippine Aquatics Inc (PAI), Southeast Asia Aquatics, presented by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and in partnership with the Province and LGU of Aklan, the event will take place over 3 days.
Running from August 21-23 the 4th SEA Open Water Swimming Championships will see as many as 120 top swimmers from eight Southeast Asian countries competing in the 3kilometer, 5kilometer and 10kilometer races.
There will be two additional races – 2kilometer and 3kilometers – open to male and female swimmers of all levels.
The competition has previously been held in Bali, Indonesia and Thailand.
New Express Train Between Clark and Makati
A proposed express rail project will see a journey between Clark International Airport and the Makati Central Business District, reduced to less than an hour.
The North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) will include a stop that will be linked to the Clark International Airport (CRK) via an elevated walkway.
The rail project will reclaim sections of the historical railway tract used by Japanese troupes to transport American and Filipino survivors of the Bataan Death March to Capas, Tarlac.
Irish Calaguas, Assistant Secretary for the Right-of-Way (ROW) Acquisition for Rail and Road of the DOTr advised that when the Airport Express service is fully opened it will serve up to 800,000 passengers a day traveling between Clark to Calamba, Laguna.
Travel Agencies have cautiously welcomed the news of the high speed rail link, especially after so many domestic flights were moved from Manila’s NAIA airports to Clark in the last half of 2025.
Siargao Scores World Surf Championship Tour
Siargao has scored a competition host spot on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour for seasons 2026 and 2027.
The Philippine leg of the WSL 2026 Championship Tour will be held at Siargao’s infamous Cloud 9, starting on October 31. The competitions will run until November 10, with 24 men and 16 women expected to compete this year.
Patrick Gregorio, Chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), celebrated the announcement noting a win for Philippine tourism: “The biggest tourism events in the world are sports events”.
The spot in the World Surf League comes with acknowledgement that some improvements will need to be made to the island’s infrastructure, including in-island transportation, the airport, and medical and security facilities.
General Luna Vice Mayor Dr. Romina “Minmin” Sajulga confirmed that the respective government departments will be working hard to fast-track and complete the infrastructure upgrades needed to support the competition.
DoubleDragon Tops Off Quezon’s Largest Hotel.
DoubleDragon Corp “topped-off” its latest hotel project in Quezon City today, July 17.
The structural work on the 702-roomed hotel at Robinsons Bridgetowne Estate, was completed and a topping off ceremony held to celebrate.
Once open, the Hotel101-Libis project will be the largest hotel in Quezon City.
The topping off ceremony took place just days after the company announced it would be opening its first Filipino hotel in Kutchan, Japan. The opening of the Hotel101-Niseko is expected to take place in December 2026.
It will be the second overseas hotel for DoubleDragon. Their first hotel opened in Madrid in March. Both hotels have been built in prime locations for sports tourism.
Snake Sightings Spark Cebu Tourism Warning.
Reported sightings of Cobras at Kawasan Falls briefly halted tourism activities this week.
The Municipal Tourism Office (MTO) has promised to install signs around the Kawasan Falls and canyoneering site, which will provide information and remind visitors to follow safety guidelines while visiting.
The Tourism Office also reminded visitors to stay within designated areas, and follow tour guides advice and safety guidelines.

Manila Bartender Makes Cocktail Finals
Bartender Alex Feliciano, of Manila Marriott Hotel Newport World Resorts, has made it through to the final of the 2026 Marriott International APEC Sustainable Bartender Championship.
Alex, recognized as a Rising Star winner SKVP (South Korea-Vietnam-Philippines), won his spot in the competition final with a sustainable cocktail inspired by childhood memories of Indian mangoes with salt. He named his cocktail ‘Mulat’.
Alex will compete in the September finals in Singapore.
Cebu Bags Next Philippine Cocktail Fiesta
It was announced this week that Cebu will be the next Philippine Cocktail Fiesta host – the first city outside of Metro Manila to host the fiesta.
It’s a move that will see the fiesta held in different Philippine destinations each year on a rotating host-city schedule.
“Moving the festival allows us to introduce international bars, media, and hospitality professionals from across Asia to different destinations in the Philippines, giving them the opportunity to experience each city’s food, drink, and culture firsthand.” Tatum Ancheta, Festival Director.
The public events will take place between November 13-15. But the festival will kick off on November 12 with Bar Congress, which will run until November 16.
Bar Congress is an industry-only program of panel and roundtable discussions, and masterclasses for bartenders, owners, brand partners and hospitality professionals.
The Cocktail Fiesta, and its Fiesta Exchange offshoot, is spearheaded by DrinkCollectiv.com, the Philippines’ first drink-centric publication.

Agoda Beats Booking.com
Agoda is currently considered the APAC regions top OTA (Online Travel Agency), taking the spot from Booking.com.
Agoda established a 20.9% booking share (at the end of 2025) and has continued to grow throughout Q1 of 2026.
Booking.com and Expedia by comparison have reported booking share declines in both 2025, and the first quarter of 2026.
Human Chain Blocks Beach
Tourists were stunned to witness a 3km long human chain, made up of more than 1,000 people, form on a beach in Mallorca.
The protest took place at Playa Es Trenc, Mallorca on a beach that is described as “a stunning, unspoilt beach with white sands”.
Protesters organized the rally in response to the relaxation of planning regulations which, they fear, could allow construction of tourism businesses and hotels.
“No matter how much [the government] makes videos promising that not a single metre of Es Trenc will be left touched, the reality is that this new legal framework is tailor-made to fill Es Trenc with construction, beach bars, car parks, beach services and tourist uses of all kinds,” – Part of a joint statement from several protest groups.
The regional President of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, has said the changes to the law pose no threat to the islands’ natural areas, and that the claims by the protestors were “hoaxes”.
The protestors included seniors, and families who had traveled to the beach for a protest rally under the banner “Don’t touch Es Trenc”.
More protests have been organized throughout Spain as it faces the European super peak summer season, and increasing anger from locals who blame tourism for a shortage of accommodation, and rising rental and cost of living costs.
15 Tourists Killed In Vietnam Boat Accident
15 Indian tourists were killed after a speedboat capsized off southern Vietnam earlier this week.
The accident happened on the afternoon of July 11, shortly after the vessel left Hon May Rut Nhoai Island, less than half a kilometer from shore. The speedboat had been transporting 32 Indian tourists and had 4 Vietnamese crew on board.
One of the tourists told The Associated Press “The boat had not even gone half a kilometer when it just tipped over.”
The tourists are believed to be employees, distributors and retail partners of Lava International, a smartphone and consumer electronics manufacturer based in Uttar Pradesh, who were on a business trip.
The Indian Embassy assisted with the repatriation of its 11 dead citizens on Monday July 13. 16 of the survivors have now been released from hospital and are expected to return home.
1 survivor remains in hospital in critical condition.
While the Boat Captain, Nguyen Hong Hai, is facing charges of alleged violations of waterway transport safety regulations, witnesses have reported there were rough seas and strong winds at the time of the accident.
Australia’s “Hospitality Wars” Arsonist Arrested
Australian Police have announced the arrest of a significant crime syndicate member, believed to be behind the targeting of hospitality businesses in Melbourne.
Dubbed the “hospitality wars” the syndicate known as “The Commission” has been targeting Victoria’s tobacco stores for the last three years. This year the group extended their arson attacks on licensed hospitality venues.
The Commission is allegedly led by Kazem Hamad who is operating out of Iraq. It is believed that he, and other senior members of the crime syndicate, has directed arson attacks, kidnappings and home invasions throughout Melbourne.
A member of the syndicate, 20 year old Jesse “Commbank” Hadchiti, was arrested on July 14. Hadchiti has been charged with offences including aggravated home invasion with an offensive weapon, kidnapping, extortion with threats to kill, false imprisonment, attempting to commit arson, and recruiting a child to engage in criminal activity.
The police have been able to connect Hadchiti directly to the arson attacks, and to recruiting teens for other criminal activities, after monitoring conversations on an encrypted app.
Cruise Ships Stranded On Danube and Rhine
A number of cruise ships became stranded on the Danube River and Rhine this week after drops in water levels meant they were unable to sail.
Several cruise ships have found themselves stranded just north of Budapest, with the usual sight seeing trips suspended. Some changes to itineraries have been made, and some planned excursions have been adjusted to allow passengers to visit locations via coaches instead.
Two cruises – the Danube Dreams and the Danube from Romania to Germany – have been cancelled entirely.
The water levels on the river have dropped so low that a “ghost fleet” of German warships, sunk during World War Two, have been revealed.
Rather than being causalities of the war, the fleet was intentionally sunk in a zig-zag formation by a retreating German navy to prevent the Soviet navy from following them and advancing.
According to Reuters these ships re-emerged near Prahovo, Serbia, and Mohacs, Hungary, and it is believed that many of them remain packed with unexploded explosives.
The Danube, the second-longest river in Europe, hasn’t experienced such low water levels for 8 years.
